How many treatments will I need?
Because every patient and every tattoo is different, there is no set number of treatments for achieving maximal laser tattoo removal. The number of treatments you will need is unique to your tattoo and is based on a variety of factors. The average number of treatments most patients will need is between 5 and 10, and sometimes only 3 to 4 for patients with older or more faded tattoos. During your free consultation, one of our expert laser technicians will use a variety of factors to best estimate the number of treatments you will need. These factors include:
- Age of tattoo
- Size of tattoo
- Location of tattoo
- Density of ink
- Depth of ink
- Quality of tattoo (professional or amateur)
- Pre-existing scarring
- Patient health
How long before I see complete removal of my tattoos?
Laser tattoo removal is a lengthy procedure that requires both time and commitment. Patients should understand that most tattoos need multiple treatments before seeing complete fading. That being said, treatments are spaced a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks apart. This time period is necessary for your safety and gives your skin enough time to heal before undergoing another laser treatment. Receiving another treatment too early into the healing process can increase risks of unwanted side effects. Our Astanza Duality is designed to eliminate more ink within each treatment session, lessening the number of overall treatments needed. Remember, each tattoo is as individual as the person it’s on, so results vary and complete removal can never be guaranteed.
Is the laser painful?
Laser tattoo removal is often compared to a rubber band being snapped against the skin. Many patients have described the procedure as being tolerable and on less or equal par with the sensation of having a tattoo applied. Ann Arbor Laser Tattoo Removal Specialists offers skin numbing with the Zimmer Cryo cooling machine. This technology helps numb the skin before, during, and after your treatment, alleviating any pain or worries associated with the laser.
Are there any side effects?
Laser tattoo removal is the safest method for getting rid of unwanted tattoos. Our Astanza Duality laser uses advanced technology to safely penetrate the skin without causing any damage or harm to the surrounding skin tissue. The most common side effects of laser tattoo removal are swelling, redness, pigment changes, blistering, and scarring. All of these side effects are temporary and will heal over the weeks following treatment. Patients are highly advised to implement proper aftercare to the treatment site to ensure their skin heals flawlessly. Visit our aftercare page for more information.

Can you fade my tattoo for a cover-up?
Our Astanza Duality can perform complete removal, partial removal, and fading for tattoo cover-ups. Cover-up tattoos are a great solution for patients looking to conceal their original artwork with a new design. Many tattoo artists have a difficult time covering up existing tattoos that have a lot of dark colors, causing them to use double the amount of ink to try and hide the original artwork. Laser tattoo removal is the perfect solution for patients looking to get a cover-up tattoo. Our laser technology can lighten a tattoo after 1 or 2 treatments and provide a cleaner canvas for your tattoo artist to work on.
